Green Amaranth (Amaranthus retroflexus)

Identification: Flowers green, mixed with elongate, bristlelike bracts. Flowers arranged in a number of short, stubby spikes with a spiny appearance. Foliage and stems downy and gray-green in coloration. Leaves ovate. Plant 0.5 to 2 feet in height.

Distribution: Throughout North America.

Habitat: Green Amaranth is found in disturbed habitats including empty lots, roadsides, and lake shores.

Flowering period: August to October.
