Hairy Ruellia (Ruellia caroliniensis)

Identification: Flowers large, trumpet-shaped, lavender in color, arising from the leaf axils. Corolla elongate, its base surrounded by a spiny calyx. Flower not stalked and with a pair of small leaves at its base. Leaves and stems covered with fine hair. Leaves elongate-ovate. Plant 1.0 to 2.5 feet in height.

Distribution: The northern limit of this species' distribution is from southern Ohio, New Jersey, and Maryland, extending south to Florida and Texas.

Habitat: Hairy Ruellia is typically found in woods and along wood margins.

Flowering period: June to September.
