Engelmann's Arrowhead (Sagittaria engelmanniana) |
|
Sagittaria latifolia Engelmann's Arrowhead is easily confused with thin leaved varieties of Broad-leaved Arrowhead. The essential differences are technical; in particular Engelmann's Arrowhead has fewer stamens (15-25) per flower than Broad-leaved Arrowhead (25-40). The acid water, coastal distribution of Engelmann's Arrowhead, as well as the thin leaves, will usually identify it. Engelmann's Arrowhead (Sagittaria engelmanniana) Identification: Aquatic. Flowers with three, large white petals. Flowers arranged in groups of three. Stamens 15 to 25 per flower. Fruits stalked. Leaves either thin and bladelike or arrowhead-shaped, but thin and very narrow. Distribution: A coastal species found from Massachusetts in the north, southward to Georgia and Mississippi. Habitat: This species is found in bogs and other acid waters along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Flowering period: July to October.
