Sessile-fruited Arrowhead (Sagittaria rigida)

Identification: Aquatic. Flowers with three, large white petals. Flowers arranged in groups of three. Fruits and female flowers sessile to the flowering stem, with prickles. Leaves usually elongate ovate without backward pointed projections, but sometimes arrowhead-shaped.

Distribution: Southeastern Canada southward to Virginia and and Arkansas. Also known from Idaho and California.

Habitat: This species is found in swamps and muddy areas, and other areas of brackish water.

Flowering period: July to October.

Similar Species:

Sessile-fruited Arrowhead is easily identified by the sessile, prickly fruits, if you're lucky enough to find plants in fruit. If you're not so lucky, the predominance of leaves without backward projections is a good, but not full-proof indication, of Sessile-fruited Arrowhead.
