Sweet Flag (Acorus calamus L.)

Identification: Flowers greenish-yellow, small, clustered on a fleshy, narrow, conical projection (spadix). Leaves rigid, grasslike. Plant 1 to 4 feet in height.

Distribution: Throughout most of eastern North America. Also occurs on the Pacific Coast and in the Midwest.

Habitat: Sweet Flag is found in wet meadows and along the shores of ponds and lakes.

Flowering period:  May to August.

Similar Species: Sweet Flag is unlikely to be confused with any other eastern North American plant species.
