Hydrocotyle umbellata Umbellate Water Pennywort has a leaf stalk attached to the center of the leaf (peltate) and the flowers in round clusters on long flower stalks. American Water Pennywort (Hydrocotyle americana) Identification: An aquatic plant with rounded leaves. Flowers small, white, flush (sessile) with the stem. Seed round with strong vertical ridges. Leaves rounded, weakly lobed, and cleft at the base. Leaf stalk attached at base of leaf cleft. Plant arranged in a small group of leaves and flowers attached by thin runners to other similar groupings. Distribution: Southern Canada, westward to Minnesota, and southward to Pennsylvania. Also found further south in the mountains to North Carolina and westward to Arkansas. Habitat:American Water Pennywort is found in a variety of wet habitats. Flowering period: June to September. |
