Berula erecta The leaves of Cut-leaved Water Parsnip are more irregularly toothed and not clearly lancelike. The bracts of Cut-leaved Water Parsnip are wider and the stem is not as strongly ridged.
Cicuta maculata The leaves of Water Hemlock are doubly divided and not lancelike. Hemlock Water Parsnip (Sium suave) Identification: Flowers white, in a well-formed umbel. Base of umbel with a rosette of thin bracts. Upper and middle leaves divided into 3 to 7 pairs of lance-shaped leaflets. Leaflets sharply toothed. Basal leaves finely divided and fernlike unless covered with water. Stem with strong ridges. Plant 2 to 6 feet in height. Distribution: Throughout most of North America. Habitat: Hemlock Water Parsnip is found in swamps, wet meadows, and ditches. Flowering period: July to September.
