Hemlock Water Parsnip (Sium suave)

Identification: Flowers white, in a well-formed umbel. Base of umbel with a rosette of thin bracts. Upper and middle leaves divided into 3 to 7 pairs of lance-shaped leaflets. Leaflets sharply toothed. Basal leaves finely divided and fernlike unless covered with water. Stem with strong ridges. Plant 2 to 6 feet in height.

Distribution: Throughout most of North America.

Habitat: Hemlock Water Parsnip is found in swamps, wet meadows, and ditches.

Flowering period: July to September.
