Golden Alexanders (Zizia aurea)

Identification: Flowers yellow, arranged in an umbel. Stem smooth, commonly tinged with red. Leaves doubly compound, divided into 3 primary segments, each itself divided into 3 secondary leaflets. Outer margin of each leaflet evenly dentate. Plant 1 to 3 feet in height.

Distribution: Most of eastern North America, Texas, and the Great Plains.

Habitat: Golden Alexanders is a species of wet, but not flooded, habitats including meadows, wet thickets, and swamps.

Flowering period: April to June.
