Twinflower (Linnaea borealis) Identification: A creeping plant with prostrate stems running along the ground sending up small branches of vegetation at intervals. Each branch with a long flower stalk topped by two nodding, pink, tubular flowers. Flowers very fragrant. Leaves round, in irregular pairs. Flower stalks 3 to 6 inches in height. Distribution: Canada southward to Indiana in the west to New York in the east and southward in the mountains to West Virginia and Tennessee. Also occurs in most of western North America. Habitat: Twinflower is a species of cold, northern woods. Flowering period: June to August. |
