Dwarf Glasswort (Salicornia bigelovii)

Identification: Plant succulent, jointed, leaves reduced to fleshy sheaths. Plant may turn red in winter. Flowers extremely small, sunken into the joints, and commonly only the stamens visible. Joints wider than long. Plant erect, 2 to 12 inches in height.

Distribution: Found along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts from Maine to Florida and Texas. Also known from California.

Habitat: Dwarf Glasswort is found in salt marshes.

Flowering period: August to October.
