Frostweed (Helianthemum canadense)

Identification: Flowers yellow with 5 large petals and many stamens. Flowers either single or in small clusters. Later flowers lack petals and occur on branches. Leaves small, ovate-elongate, with smooth outer margins. Plant 6 to 20 inches in height.

Distribution: Southern Canada southward to Missouri in the west and Georgia in the east.

Habitat: Frostweed is found on sandy or rocky soils.

Flowering period: May to June.
