Hudsonia tomentosa Golden Heather is similar in appearance and habitat to False Heather. However the scalelike leaves of False Heather are covered with a whitish down and are closely appressed to the stem. The flowers are mostly apical. Golden Heather (Hudsonia ericoides) Identification: Flowers yellow with 5 pointed petals, arising from the leaf axils. Leaves green, very small, but spreading outward. Plant occurs in bush-like clumps. Plant 4 to 8 inches in height. Distribution: Found from the Maritime Provinces of Canada southward along the Atlantic Coast to South Carolina. Habitat: Golden Heather is found primarily on sandy soil in pine barrens and on beach dunes. Flowering period: May to July. |
