False Heather (Hudsonia tomentosa)

Identification: Flowers yellow with 5 pointed petals, arising primarily from the tops of the stems. Leaves green covered with a whitish down, very small, closely appressed to the stem. Plant occurs in bushlike clumps. Plant 4 to 8 inches in height.

Distribution: Southeastern Canada southward along the coast to North Carolina. Also occurs along the Great Lakes.

Habitat: False Heather is found along beaches and sand dunes.

Flowering period: May to July.
