St. Peterswort (Hypericum crux-andreae)

Identification: Flowers yellow, showy, with 4 petals and 3 or 4 styles. Petals located at right angles with each other, interspersed with the sepals. Four sepals; two large, and two small, narrow. Leaves elliptical, ovate, opposite and sessile on the stem. Plant 1 to 2.5 feet in height.

Distribution:Long Island southward to Florida. Also found in Texas and Tennessee.

Habitat: St. Peterswort is found on a variety of sandy soils, but is particularly common in pine barrens.

Flowering period: July to September.
