Coppery St. Johnswort (Hypericum denticulatum)

Identification: Flowers yellow with a copper hue. Three styles, free, barely united at the base. Flowers numerous at the top of the plant. Stem and branches with 4 angles. Leaves small, variable, either narrow and pointed, or elliptical. Plant 8 to 20 inches in height.

Distribution: New York and Pennsylvania in the north, southward to Georgia and Alabama.

Habitat: Coppery St. Johnswort is found in sandy soils, particularly pine barrens and along the sandy shores of lakes.

Flowering period: June to August.

Similar Species: The square stems and coppery yellow flowers readily separate this species from other species of Hypericum.
