St. Andrew's Cross (Hypericum hypericoides)

Identification: Flowers yellow, showy, with 4 narrow petals. Petals aligned in an oblique cross. Calyx with 2 huge sepals and 2 greatly reduced ones. Leaves elongate-elliptical. Plant 5 to 10 inches in height.

Distribution: Most of the eastern United States except for New England and the north-central states.

Habitat: St. Andrew's Cross is found on sandy or rocky soils.

Flowering period: July to August.
