Dwarf St. Johnswort (Hypericum mutilum) Identification: Flowers orange-yellow, small (0.25 inches in diameter), with 5 petals and between 5 and 12 stamens. Flowers arranged on a series of apical branches in small groups. Stem branched. Leaves broad, ovate, rounded at the apex, although tapering somewhat. Plant 1 to 3 feet in height. Distribution: Throughout eastern North America. Habitat: Dwarf St. Johnswort is found in a variety of low, wet habitats. Flowering period: July to September. Similar Species: The small orange-yellow flowers with 12 or fewer stamens and the the broad, ovate leaves will usually identify this species.
