Shrubby St. Johnswort (Hypericum prolificum)

Identification: Plant a heavily branched shrub. Flowers yellow, large, with 5 petals. Stamens extremely numerous forming a yellow, light tipped brush. Flower with 3 fused styles. Stems woody with 2 edges. Leaves elongate-elliptical, tapering toward the apex. Plant 1 to 4 feet in height.

Distribution: Throughout eastern North America.

Habitat: Shrubby St. Johnswort is found in fields, pastures, and along lake shores.

Flowering period: July to September.

The combination of the woody, shrubby plant type with the large, yellow flowers with a brush of elongate stamens easily identifies this species.
