Commelina virginica An erect species. The lower petal of Virginia Dayflower is the same blue color as the top two petals.
Commelina erecta An erect species. The lower petal of the Slender Dayflower is also white, but single, not trilobed. Asiatic Day Flower (Commelina communis) Alien: Native of Asia. Identification: Plant reclining, stems along the ground and rooting at the nodes. Flowers with two large, blue, dorsal banners and a small, white, trilobed lower petal. Stamens tipped with yellow. Leaves, broad, grasslike, and wrapping around the stem. Distribution: Throughout eastern and central North America. Habitat: Asiatic Day Flower is a weedy species found in moist, disturbed habitats such as fields, ditches, and roadsides. Flowering period: June to October. |
