Virginia Dayflower (Commelina virginica)

Identification: Plant erect, not reclining along the ground. Flowers with two large, blue dorsal banners and a smaller blue, single lobed lower petal. Stamens tipped with yellow. Leaves, broad, grasslike, and wrapping around the stem. Plant 1 to 3.5 feet in height.

Distribution: Illinois in the west to southern Pennsylvania in the east, southward to Florida and Texas.

Habitat: Virginia Dayflower is found in the moist soils of woods and thickets.

Flowering period: July to October.
