Spiderwort (Tradescantia virginiana)

Identification: Flowers with three rounded, symmetrical, dark blue petals. Stamens accented with light yellow. Flowers arranged in clusters. Clusters usually include nodding flower buds. Leaves elongate, broad, and curled.

Distribution: Minnesota and Iowa in the west to Maine in the east, southward to Georgia and Louisiana.

Habitat: Spiderwort is usually found in open woods or along the margins of woods.

Flowering period: April to July.

Comments: There are a number of other species of Tradescantia in eastern North America. These species can be difficult to separate from T. virginiana.
