Upright Bindweed (Calystegia spithamaeus)

Identification: An erect plant, not a vine. Flowers petunialike with 5 petals fused into a trumpet bell shape. Flower white or pink. Stem erect. Leaves ovate-elliptical with smooth outer margins and no lobes or projections. Plant 6 to 12 inches in height.

Distribution: Southeastern Canada southward to Georgia and Missouri.

Habitat: Upright Bindweed is found on dry rocky or sandy soils.

Flowering period: May to July.

The erect stature of the plant as well as the ovate-elliptical leaves easily identify this species.
