Orpine (Hylotelephium telephium) Alien: Native of Europe. Identification: Flowers red-purple to white, with 5 pointed petals. Flowers arranged in rounded clusters on the end of long stems arising from leaf axils. Stems smooth, commonly tinted with purple. Leaves fleshy, succulent, commonly curling slightly and with coarsely dentate outer margins. Plant 12 to 18 inches in height. Distribution: Southern Canada to Minnesota in the west, eastward to Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and southward to South Carolina and Missouri. Also known from the Pacific Northwest. Habitat: Orpine is a species of disturbed habitats including roadsides, fields, and empty lots. Flowering period: August to September. |
