Mossy Stonecrop (Sedum acre)

Alien: Native of Europe.

Identification: Plant mosslike, growing in mats. Flowers yellow with 5 pointed petals in a starlike arrangement. Leaves small, fat, succulent, ovate, and tasting like pepper. Plant spreading from prostrate, running stems. Plant 2 to 4 inches in height.

Distribution: Southeastern Canada and the northeastern United States. Also occurs in the northwest and Colorado.

Habitat: Mossy Stonecrop is found on rocks, cliffs, sand dunes, and walls.

Flowering period: June to July.

Similar Species:

The yellow, starlike flowers, tiny, fat leaves with the taste of pepper, and its matted mosslike appearance easily identify this species.
