Small Bugloss (Anchusa arvensis)

Alien: Native of Europe.

Identification: Flowers bright blue, with 5 petals, and a long tubular corolla. Corolla with a kink at the base. Sepals elongate and bristly. Flowers in curled sprays that uncoil as the flowers bloom. Stem and leaves hairy. Leaves mostly alternate on the stem, blade-shaped, hairy, and with wrinkled margins. Plant 8 to 18 inches in height.

Distribution: Across Canada southward to Minnesota, Ohio, Tennessee, and North Carolina in the east, across the northern tier of western states, and California.

Habitat: Small Bugloss is found on sandly soils and dry fields.

Flowering period: June to September.
