Lithospermum caroliniense Hairy Puccoon has larger flowers (up to 1 inches in diameter). The flowers may be clustered in vaguely curled sprays. The leaves are wider and densely hairy.
Lithospermum incisum The leaves of Narrow-leaved Puccoon are extremely thin and narrow and the flower petals are toothed. Hoary Puccoon (Lithospermum canescens) Identification: Flowers small (less than 0.4 inches in width), yellow-orange, with 5 petals, lower half fused into a tube hiding the stamens. Flowers arranged in a flat-topped cluster. Stem and leaves with gray pubescence. Leaves alternate, slender, with a smooth outer margin. Plant 2 to 20 inches in height. Distribution: Saskatchewan in the west to southern Ontario in the east and southward (primarily in the Mississippi Valley) to Georgia and Texas. Habitat: Hoary Pucoon is found on dry or sandy soils in prairies or open woods. Flowering period: April to June. |
