False Gromwell (Onosmodium virginianum)

Identification: Flowers white, with 5 petals fused into a tubular corolla with free, pointed petal lobes at the apex. Center of corolla with a long, threadlike style projecting. Flowers arranged in strongly curled sprays. Stem bristly. Leaves elongate, increasing in width toward the apex. Base sessile with the stem. Plant tall, 3 to 4 feet in height.

Distribution: New England, southward along the coastal states to Florida and Louisiana.

Habitat: False Gromwell is an inhabitant of sandy soil and dry open woods.

Flowering period: June to July.

Similar Species:

The strongly curled flower sprays, pointed petal lobes, and strongly projecting, threadlike style should readily identify False Gromwell.
