Cardamine rotundifolia The lower leaves of Mountain Watercress resemble Spring Cress. However the leaf petiole has a pair of small, lateral lobes. The leaf margins of the upper leaves of Mountain Cress are not strongly toothed. Spring Cress (Cardamine bulbosa) Identification: Flowers white, in a terminal cluster. Seed pods elongate, pointed at the apex, but without a distinct beak. Basal leaves kidney-shaped, outer margins without teeth, and each leaf on a long leaf petiole. Middle leaves sessile to the stem and with strong teeth on the outer margin. Plant arising from a bulblike root. Plant 8 to 20 inches in height. Distribution: Southern Canada, southward to Florida and Texas. Also found in the central Plains States. Habitat: Spring Cress is found in low woods, wet meadows, and near springs. Flowering Period: March to June. |
