Cardamine diphylla Toothwort has a single pair of nearly opposite stem leaves, not a group of three leaves at different levels along the stem.
Cardamine angustata The stem leaves of Slender Toothwort are small, linear, untoothed, and much different in shape and size than the basal leaves. Large Toothwort (Cardamine maxima) Identification: Flowers white to pale purple, relatively large. Three stem leaves with broad lobes and arranged at different levels along the stem. Lobes of each leaflet sometimes themselves subdivided, at least heavily dentate. Plant 6 to 16 inches in height. Distribution: Across the northeastern United States from Wisconsin to Maine, southward in the mountains to Tennessee. Habitat: Large Toothwort occurs in wet woods and along streambanks. Flowering period: April to May. Note: This species has been referred to as Dentaria maxima. |
