Cardamine pensylvanica Cuckoo Flower is most similar to Pennsylvania Bittercress. The flowers of Pennsylvania Bittercress are much smaller (about 1/16 of an inch). The leaflets of Pennsylvania Bittercress are much more linear than the irregular, quadrate leaflets of Cuckoo Flower. Cuckoo Flower (Cardamine pratensis) Identification: Flowers white or pink, large (1/2 to 3/4 inches), assembled in a terminal cluster. Seed pods narrow and linear without a distinct apical beak. Middle and basal leaves consisting of an apical leaflet and several pairs of ovate to quadrate lateral leaflets. Plant 0.75 to 1.65 feet in height. Distribution: Arctic Canada southward to northern Illinois in the west and eastward to New Jersey, West Virginia and Ohio. This species also occurs in Europe and northern Asia. Habitat: Cuckoo Flower is found in swamps, wet woods, and around springs. Flowering Period: April to June. |
