Lepidium campestre The stem leaves of Poor-man's Pepper taper at the base and do not clasp the stem as in Cow Cress. The basal leaves of Poor-man's Pepper are toothed and have small lobes near the base. Poor-man's Pepper (Lepidium virginicum) Identification: Flowers white, arranged in a series of racemes. Seed pods flattened, ovate, weakly notched at the apex and with the membranous part only at the apex. Bottom leaves in a basal rosette, outer margins toothed with the lower half consisting of a series of small lobes. Stem leaves tapering to the base and without basal projections clasping the stem. Plant 6 inches to 2 feet in height. Distribution: Throughout North America. Habitat: This species occurs in a wide variety of disturbed habitats including roadside and fields. Flowering period: June to November. |
