Tall Bellflower (Campanulastrum americanum)

Identification: Flower not bell-shaped, but flat with 5 distinct petals. Flower blue to light-blue with a pale central ring, and a large, long, curved style in the center. Flowers arising from the leaf axils along the upper part of the stem. Stem wiry. Leaves blade-shaped with toothed margins and with the lower margin running onto the petiole. Plant 1.5 to 6 feet in height.

Distribution: Throughout most of eastern North America except New England. Also in the central United States.

Habitat: Tall Bellflower is found in rich soil, along river and stream banks, and in thickets.

Flowering period: June to August.

Similar Species:

The flat, blue flowers with a pale central ring, and long, curved style as well as their point of origin from the leaf axils along the upper part of the stem easily identify this species.
