Water Lobelia (Lobelia dortmanna)

Identification: Plant aquatic. Flowers typical of the lobelias with 5 petals fused into a basal tube. Three lower petal lobes projecting downward. Upper 2 petals curled upward. Flowers light blue to whitish, widely spaced on long flower stems. Stem without upper leaves. Lower leaves under water, linear, narrow and forming a dense basal rosette. Plant 6 to 18 inches in height.

Distribution: Southern Canada, southward to Minnesota and eastward to Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey. Also occurs in the Pacific Northwest and Europe.

Habitat: Water Lobelia is an aquatic plant found along the margins of ponds and lakes.

Flowering period: July to October.
