Mountain Sandwort (Minuartia groenlandica)

Identification: Flowers white with petals rounded, but only weakly (if at all) notched at the tip. Leaves narrow, usually in opposite pairs, basal leaves often forming mats. Plants commonly clustered in clumps. Plant 2 to 5 inches in height.

Distribution: Northern Canada southward to the mountains of upper New York and New England and along the coast to Maine. Occurs southward in the mountains to Tennessee and North Carolina.

Habitat: Mountain Sandwort is found on rocks, typically near mountain tops.

Flowering period: May to September.

Similar Species:

Rock Sandwort (Minuartia michauxii)

Pine Barren Sandwort (Minuartia caroliniana)

Other species of sandworts with needle-like leaves are Rock Sandwort and Pine Barren Sandwort. Pine Barren Sandwort has a more southern distribution (New Jersey and south) and the flower petals are narrow and pointed. Rock Sandwort has whorls of needle-like leaves along the stem.
