Royal Catchfly (Silene regia)

Identification: Flowers red with slender, elongate petals. Flower capsule elongate and conical. Calyx with sticky sepals. Leaves rounded at the base, tapering to a sharp apex. Outer margin smooth, leaves in opposite pairs, and sessile to the stem. Plant 2 to 4 feet in height.

Distribution: Kansas and Oklahoma in the west to Ohio, Georgia, and Florida in the east.

Habitat: Royal Catchfly is a species of prairies and dry woods.

Flowering period: June to August.
