Silene regia The petals of Royal Catchfly are not notched at the apex.
Silene virginica The leaves of Fire Pink are much narrower than are those of Roundleaf Catchfly. Roundleaf Catchfly (Silene rotundifolia) Identification: Flowers red with elongate petals deeply notched at the tip. Flower capsule elongate, conical. Leaves in opposite pairs, broad in the middle, tapering toward the apex and the base. Plant 8 to 28 inches in height. Distribution: Southern Ohio and West Virginia south to Georgia and Alabama. Habitat: Roundleaf Catchfly is found on rocky slopes and cliffs. Flowering period: June to July. |
