Pseudognaphalium obtusifolium Pearly Everlasting is most likely to be confused with Sweet Everlasting. The flowers of Sweet Everlasting are smaller than those of Pearly Everlasting, remain closed until in seed, and the flowers are in a more branched, rounder cluster. Pearly Everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea) Identification: Flowers barrel-shaped with dry white bracts around a yellow to yellow-orange center. Flowers arranged in a flat-topped cluster. Stem covered with white, downy hair. Leaves elongate, linear, usually gray-green above and woolly-white below. Plant 1 to 3 feet in height. Distribution: Southern Canada and the northeastern United States, southward to Virginia and in the mountains to North Carolina. Also found throughout the western United States. Habitat: Pearly Everlasting is found on the dry soils of fields and pastures. Flowering period: July to September. |
