Annual Wormwood (Artemisia annua)

Alien: Native of Europe.

Identification: Flowers small, round, yellow-green, arranged in a panicle. Plant aromatic. Leaves finely subdivided, fernlike with pointed lobes. Plant 1 to 4 feet in height.

Distribution: Southern Canada and throughout the eastern United States except for the southeast. Scattered populations in the western United States and the Prairie States.

Habitat: Annual Wormwood is a weed found in a variety of disturbed habitats including empty lots, roadsides, and fields.

Flowering period: August to October.

The finely cut fernlike leaves with pointed lobes will separate Annual Wormwood from other species of Artemisia.
