Maryland Golden Aster (Chrysopsis mariana)

Identification: Flowers yellow with prominent ray florets and a yellow disk. Floral bracts on the flower receptacle sticky. Leaves broad, ovate, with a even margin, and covered with silky hair. Stem silky. Plant 1 to 2 feet in height.

Distribution: New York and Pennsylvania westward to Ohio and Kentucky, southward to Florida and Texas.

Habitat: Maryland Aster is found on sandy soil and in pine barrens in the eastern part of eastern North America.

Flowering period: August to October.

Maryland Golden Aster (Chrysopsis mariana)

Similar Species: This species is most likely to be confused with Prairie Golden Aster (not treated here). However the ray florets of Prairie Golden Aster tend to be shorter and more compact. In addition Prairie Golden Aster is found in the western part of eastern North America in contrast to the more eastern distribution of Maryland Golden Aster.
