Eurybia macrophylla Heart-leaved Aster is most likely to be confused with Large-leaved Aster. The basal leaves of Large-leaved Aster are much larger than those of the Heart-leaved Aster. The flower bracts of the Heart-leaved Aster are smooth, narrow, and blunt, but those of the Large-leaved aster are downy and broadly tipped.
Symphyotrichum lowreianum The simple petiole of the Heart-leaved Aster will distinguish it from the flanged or clasping petiole of Lowrie's Aster or Wavy-leaved Aster.

Heart-leaved Aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium) Identification: Flowers variable in color with ray florets light blue-white or white. Disk florets yellow becoming red. Floral bracts (small leaves on the receptacle of the flower) smooth, narrow, and blunt. Leaves heart-shaped, stalked, and coarsely toothed. Stem smooth and heavily branched. Plant 1 to 4 feet in height. Distribution: Throughout most of eastern North America. Habitat: Open woods, clearings, or forest margins. Flowering period: August to October. |
