Heart-leaved Aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium)

Identification: Flowers variable in color with ray florets light blue-white or white. Disk florets yellow becoming red. Floral bracts (small leaves on the receptacle of the flower) smooth, narrow, and blunt. Leaves heart-shaped, stalked, and coarsely toothed. Stem smooth and heavily branched. Plant 1 to 4 feet in height.

Distribution: Throughout most of eastern North America.

Habitat: Open woods, clearings, or forest margins.

Flowering period: August to October.
