Lowrie's Aster (Symphyotrichum lowrieanum)

Identification: Flowers either pale blue (most common) or white. The leaf is heart-shaped, without an indentation at the petiole (except for the basal leaves), and the petiole has a distinctive flange other either side. Plant 1 to 3 feet in height.

Distribution: New York, Ohio, and southern New England in the north, southward to Georgia and Alabama.

Habitat: Open woods.

Flowering period: August to October.

The flanges on the sides of the upper leaves distinguish this species from other asters with heart-shaped leaves.
