Short's Aster (Symphyotrichum shortii)

Identification: Flowers with ray florets pale blue, pink, or white. Floral bracts (on the receptacle of the flower) finely pubescent. Leaves narrow, but clearly heart-shaped and without marginal teeth or only a few teeth. Leaf stalk thin and wiry. Plant 2 to 4 feet in height.

Distribution: Throughout most of the eastern United States except New England.

Habitat: Found along the margins of woods or on wooded slopes.

Flowering period: August to October.

Similar species:

The wiry leaf stalks and the toothless leaf margins will separate this aster from other asters with heart-shaped leaves.
