Tradescant's Aster (Symphyotrichum tradescantii)

Identification: Flowers with white or purple ray florets. Flower heads arising from the axils of the leaves. Leaves elongate, lanceolate, those on the lower part of the plant weakly toothed. Plant 2 to 5 feet in height.

Distribution: Southeastern Canada and New England.

Habitat: Wet fields and along the shores of ponds, lakes, and rivers.

Flowering period: July to September.
