Erechtites hieracifolia Pilewort has the base of the flower swollen and the stem is grooved. False Boneset (Brickellia eupatoroides) Identification: Flowers cylindrical, drab, lacking rays, and with white disk flowers. Flowers arranged in a rough flat-topped cluster or more compact clusters. Leaves, alternate, spotted with resin dots, elongate, tapering at both apex and base. Outer margin either entire or weakly toothed. Plant 1 to 3 feet in height. Distribution: Minnesota in the west and New Jersey in the east, southward to Florida and Texas. Also found in the Plains States and the eastern Rocky Mountain states. Habitat: False Boneset is found in open woods and fields with dry soil. Flowering period: August to September. |

Similar Species: Pilewort (Erechtites hieracifolia) Species of the genus Arnoglossum have large basal leaves. False Boneset may be distinguished from the species of Eupatorium (including the true bonesets) by the alternate, not opposite leaves. |
