Bidens connata Beggar Ticks might be confused with Swamp Beggar Ticks, another species of Bidens without ray florets. The leaves of Swamp Beggar Ticks, however are undivided and occur in opposite pairs along the stem. Beggar Ticks (Bidens frondosa) Identification: Ray florets absent, disk of flower yellow-orange. Seeds (achenes) with 2 apical barbs. Base of flower with a circle of green, leaflike bracts. Leaves divided into 3 to 5 sharply dentate leaflets. Plant 1 to 4 feet in height. Distribution: Throughout the eastern North American region. Habitat: Beggar Ticks are a common plant of waste areas, roadsides, and low, wet habitats. Flowering period: August to October. |
