Beggar Ticks (Bidens frondosa)

Identification: Ray florets absent, disk of flower yellow-orange. Seeds (achenes) with 2 apical barbs. Base of flower with a circle of green, leaflike bracts. Leaves divided into 3 to 5 sharply dentate leaflets. Plant 1 to 4 feet in height.

Distribution: Throughout the eastern North American region.

Habitat: Beggar Ticks are a common plant of waste areas, roadsides, and low, wet habitats.

Flowering period: August to October.
