Eupatorium purpureum The stem of Sweet Joe-pye-weed is green, not spotted purple or spotted with purple. The leaves of Sweet Joe-pye-weed are broader and less elongate than those of Spotted Joe-pye-weed and are arranged in whorls of 3 to 4, not whorls of 4 to 5. Spotted Joe-pye-weed (Eupatorium maculatum) Identification: Flowers pink to purple-pink, arranged in a flat-topped cluster. Leaves elongate, with dentate outer margins, and arranged in whorls of 4 to 5 leaves. Stem purple or green spotted with purple. Plant 2 to 6 feet in height. Distribution: Most of the United States but absent from the southeastern United States and the Pacific Coast. Habitat: This species is found in meadows or clearings, usually in wetter, but non-marshy situations. Flowering period: July to September. |
