Bachelor's Button (Centaurea cyanus)

Alien: Native of Europe.

Identification: Flower consisting of a relatively small, ovate base (receptacle) and a small number of large, bright blue florets. Florets horn-shaped with spreading apices. Stem smooth. Leaves linear with smooth, outer margins. Plant 1 to 2 feet in height.

Distribution: Found nearly everywhere in North America.

Habitat: Bachelor's Button is an escape from gardens and may be found in empty lots, fields, and along roadsides.

Flowering period: July to September.

Note: Bachelor's Button is a well known garden plant than commonly escapes and survives in disturbed areas.
