Pyxidanthera barbulata A relative of Diapensia, Pyxie, is a more southern species with needlelike leaves and flowers on short to non-existent flower stalks.
Diapensia (Diapensia lapponica) Identification: Plant low and mat forming. Flowers white with 5 rounded petals and 5 stamens. Base of flower with overlaping green scales. Individual flowers on long flowering stalks. Leaves and stems forming a cushionlike tuft with dark green, linear leaves. Plant 1 to 3 inches in height. Distribution: Northern Canada and southward on high mountains to New York and New England. Diapensia also occurs in northern or alpine Europe and Asia. Habitat: Diapensia is a arctic or alpine species occurring on rocks and cliffs. Flowering period: June to July. |
