Pyxie (Pyxidanthera barbulata)

Identification: Plant forming small mats or cushions on the ground. Flowers with 5 petals and 5 stamens, white or pale pink. Flower stalks extremely short or absent. Leaves small, crowded, needlelike. Plant 2 to 4 inches in height.

Distribution: Found primarily along the Atlantic Coast from Long Island southward to South Carolina.

Habitat: Pyxie is a species of pine barrens.

Flowering period: March to May.
