Sun Spurge (Euphorbia helioscopia)

Alien: Native of Europe.

Identification: Flowers small and inconspicuous, contained in a pair of oval green to yellow bracts at the top of the plant. Ovary hanging from a thin stem. Stem with milky sap. Upper leaves in whorls of 3, ovate with the apical third finely toothed along the outer margin. Lower leaves ovate, sometimes indented at the apex. Plant 4 to 12 inches in height.

Distribution: Throughout North America, but with a spotty distribution.

Habitat: Sun Spurge is found in a variety of disturbed habitats such as dry fields and empty lots.

Flowering period: July to September.
